Call it a Man-Cave, She-Shed, or Zen Den. It's your yoga room, but whatever you choose to call it, it's a physical manifestation of your spiritual life. In the realm of yoga and healing arts, your yoga space is your sanctuary; the space you claim for yoga and meditation, and where you keep special items to inspire your practice.
I highly recommend everyone have a yoga room, or even a small space for meditation, if only to affirm your right to one. Here's some ideas to create your own yoga room, your special place adorned with things that bring you peace, comfort, and joy!
The space:
It can be as small as the space beside your bed, or as large as a room or garden patio, but it should evoke calmness and serenity. Aside from the studio itself (which is technically a shared space), my spiritual sanctuary at home is a meditation seat at my bedside adorned with a copy of Patanjali's Yogasutra, a hand-painted Heart Sutra, with photos, gifts, and notes that have been given to me over the years from family, students, and my teacher.
An altar, display table, or curio cabinet:
Select items for your yoga space that inspire or encourage you, and remind you of your purpose and your practice. Your favorite bottle of essential oil may find a home there, along with ritual items or some hand-picked flowers.
Equipment:
If you can dedicate a space just large enough to roll out a yoga mat, anything larger is a wonderful blessing. I recommend also having a couple of yoga blocks, a sitting cushion, a cylindrical bolster, and earplugs. Even if other people are just outside your door, you'll feel like you're far away in another world!
Reach out if you need more guidance setting up your yoga room, or come visit me at Full Circle and I'll share mine.
